about

I'm Tyland in Thailand, the dude who runs this site. I spent the last two and a half years in Spain writing and publishing a site for expats. Now I'm heading off to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam from the end of September till mid December 2006 to find out if there's another place as fantastic to live. Here are the moments and information that matter, including hotel and service reviews along the way.

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport

Tyland wrote this from: Bangkok, Thailand

InformationFlights

If you're wondering how Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport is, take my little photo tour and read the word blurb.

Catching up on a few photos in the ol’ Razr, here’s a little tour through the new Suvarnabhumi airport.

I read in the IHT I’d grabbed before boarding for Bangkok that now, with the airport having been open a whole 24 hours so far, the current level of lost baggage is not as horrendous as it could have been. Only 15% (I believe) of flights are losing their luggage. Yay! I have a 15% chance of using that baggage insurance I paid a mint for! :D

The airport, which was recently given the ‘BKK’ title from the old Don Muang International Airport upon opening on the 28th, is really huge. We walked through endless and massive tunnels dotted with washrooms, docking terminals, smoking rooms (!) and facilitated by loonnnggg people-conveyer belts. It takes about 20 minutes just to walk to the baggage handling area. That’s not THAT much however, and in line with my memories of Heathrow and even Lester B Pearson (hate that airport) depending on the flight, terminal, etc. I noted that there didn’t…

It’s overheated so many times causing all kinds of crashes, there are keyboard problems, wifi card problems and the OS sucks (cuz it’s Windows). It’s in the repair shop in Edmonton right now, meaning it has to be done by today or tomorrow in order for me to have it by Friday as I leave for Ottawa this Sunday (thank God it’s coming up soon, I’m getting sick of Alberta). Instead of waiting and risking the Toshiba’s luck in Thailand, I’m thinking of buying an Apple Macbook Pro laptop from their refurbished models (like 23% off).

One of the problems I had in Spain of course, was with the electrical plug-ins for my laptop. The electricity is 220V which in itself isn’t a problem as most electronic devices with rechargable batteries are able to utilize electricity in the 100-240V range. But the physical connection is that damn European two fat plug connection (they also stick out or are recessed…
